Are you craving for doughnuts/donuts? Definitely, regardless of age, doughnuts are loved by so many people around the world.
Doughnuts/donuts have been originated in 1800's and there are different variations since then. This is basically known to be an American food and National Doughnut Day is celebrated in America on the 1st Friday of June each year.
Doughnuts/donuts are usually deep fried from a flour dough, but other types of batters can also be used. Various toppings and flavours are used for different types, such as sugar, chocolate or maple glazing. Doughnuts may also include water, leavening, eggs, milk, sugar, oil, shortening, and natural or artificial flavours. The two most common types are the ring doughnut and the filled doughnut, which is injected with fruit preserves (the jelly doughnut), cream, custard, or other sweet fillings.
Below is an easy recipe you can try at home to make soft ring doughnuts.
INGREDIENTS - DOUGHNUT
- All-purpose flour - 350 g (sieved)
- Instant yeast - 5 g
- Sugar - 10 g (white, granulated)
- Fine salt - ½ teaspoon
- Egg -1 large whole egg (67 g)
- Vanilla essence - 1 teaspoon
- Fresh milk - 160 ml (slightly warm; 40 to 45 celcius)
- Butter - 30 g (unsalted and softened)
- Coconut oil - to apply around the dough and to fry
INGREDIENTS - CHOCOLATE GLAZE
- Icing sugar - 130 g (sieved)
- Cocoa powder - 2.5 tablespoons (sieved)
- Fresh milk - 1.5 tablespoons
- Vanilla essence - 1 teaspoon
METHOD
- Step 1: Mix flour, sugar and instant yeast together in a bowl until well incorporated.
- Step 2: Add the egg, vanilla essence and fresh milk into this dry ingredient mixture.
- Step 3: Using a spatula, stir until everything is mix evenly.
- Step 4: Knead the dough a few minutes until everything combines together.
- Step 5: Finally, add the softened butter and knead the dough well, until all the butter is absorbed/incorporated into the mixture.
- Step 6: Continue kneading for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Step 7: Apply a little bit of coconut oil around the dough, cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and a piece of cloth, and let it rest for 1 hour until the dough becomes double the size.
- Step 8: After 1 hour, transfer the dough onto a lightly floured flat surface and knead by hands for a few minutes.
- Step 9: Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces (about 75 g each).
- Step 10: Make each piece into a ball, cover the balls with a plastic wrap, and let those rest for 20 minutes until almost double in size.
- Step 11: Take the balls out after 20 minutes, make a hall in the middle of each ball using hand or a cutter, and let the balls rest for another 10 minutes covered with a piece of cloth.
- Step 12: After 10 minutes, fry them over medium heat for 3-4 minutes each side or until golden brown colour.
- Step 13: Now it's the time to make the chocolate glaze. Just mix all the four ingredients together until a thick yet pourable glaze is made.
- Step 14: Dip the doughnuts in the chocolate glaze and serve.
The above recipe is enough to make around 8 - 9 doughnuts/donuts. If your requirement is different you can adjust the ingredient quantities accordingly. Sometime, depending on the type/brand of ingredient we use, the quantities might need to sightly adjust. As such, when adding flour to make the dough depending on the type of flour you use, it might need to add a little more/less flour to get the required consistency.
Instead of chocolate glaze, you can try different types/flavours such as strawberry, avocado, coffee, cherry, white chocolate and matcha according to your taste and preference.
